So, they've announced who will be directing G.I. Joe 2. G.I. Joe 2, of course, follows G.I. Joe 1, which was directed by the talentless twit Stephen Sommers.
Jon Chu is directing G.I. Joe 2. The same Jon Chu who directed three Hollywood films to date:
1. Step Up 2: The Streets
2. Step Up 3D
3. Justin Bieber: Never Say Never
This has to be some kind of disgusting joke. How can Paramount and Hasbro look at this guy and say, "Well, he's done some mediocre work on films about dancing, so he's our guy for a major summer tentpole action film!"
Sure, the Transformers films aren't the greatest, but at least they got an action director with a reasonable track record to make the films. With G.I. Joe, they're not even giving the property enough respect to go looking for a better director. Maybe people don't realize this, but back in the 80s, G.I. Joe was MORE popular than Transformers. G.I. Joe was the top selling toy line for something like 10 years. I don't have the stat while I'm writing this but, in one of my history of G.I. Joe books, there is an amazing fact: Enough Joes were sold in the 80's that, on average, EVERY child, boy and girl, had 2 G.I. Joes. Transformers was NOT the big thing, yet both Hasbro and Paramount have invested so much time and money into that franchise while leaving G.I. Joe to die alone in the cold. Look at the box office results for Rise of Cobra. The movie sucked, yet it did pretty well. Just imagine what kind of money it would bring in if someone decided to put some effort into it. Make the the people who were kids when I was feel nostalgic about the property and you'll hit the gold mine.
I'm trying to keep an open mind, since many directors have gone on to do amazing work with genres they didn't have any experience in. You have to agree though that, as a G.I. Joe fan, I have a valid point in my frustrations.
Jon Fucking Chu. Really? Really?
Really?
