Here we go.
Film:
Jackass 3D took the prize this weekend for bringing in the most money from the box office (50 million). The prize was actually a nice gift basket containing a fine assortment of fruits, cheeses, and crackers, as well as a lifetime of unending physical pain caused by the idiotic abuse of one's own body. Jackass 3D has surprisingly good reviews. I've only seen the 1st Jackass film, and although I'm not planning to see Jackass 3D anytime soon, the primitive part of my brain can understand why the franchise is popular. Pointless or not, it makes people laugh.
Red did fairly well this weekend, coming in second. I have no desire to watch it. Had it been closer to the original book, which I highly recommend, I would have shelled out the outrageous theater prices to see it. As it is, it's just another sub-par action film that you're likely to forget 10 minutes aver viewing.
Paranormal Activity 2 releases this coming Friday. As far as horror films go, I'm not the expert. I generally don't take the time to watch them, nor do I like most of them I do see. That being said, I'm inclined to see this and it's predecessor more than most horror films because this series seems to rely on the more psychological scares as opposed to the "tons of gore" approach that seems to be more common nowadays. I'm sorry, but blood isn't scary. All it is is a cheap way for cheap directors to make a horror film without taking the time to create a truly frightening experience. What I do like about the film is the marketing approach. As with the first film, the internet community is being tapped to get the film into as many theaters as possible by way of a "we demand it" system. If not for that system, the 1st film would have played in a lot less theaters than it did. I was one of those who demanded it in the Denver area. Sure, i don't necessarily want to see it, but if my vote helps get it to a theater so others can see it, then I'm all for that.
Green Lantern is quickly becoming one of the more highly anticipated films of 2011. I can't lie and say that iIm not in the least bit excited. I'm a comic nerd and, although i generally can't stomach DC Comics, Green Lantern has always piqued my interest. Growing up, some of the first comics I read were Green Lantern. With today's special effects, a Green Lantern film could be amazingly enjoyable if backed by a good script. Of course, the rabid fanboys have found things to bitch about already. First of all, it's been announced that the costume will be CG. What's the problem there? The suit is a construct of the ring, which is alien technology. I don't think aliens, in their supreme intelligence, would be using spandex. The design of the lantern itself is today's source of complaint.

MGM is still having major problems, which sucks. If they don't get their shit together, we'll never see the third Daniel Craig Bond film. Why weren't they having problems when the shitty Brosnan Bond films were being made? I think we can all agree that the world would have been better off without a few of those. The Craig bond movies are fantastic, and the third film is needed to bring closure to the overarching plot that ran through Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. MGM has stated that The Hobbit now has a greenlight. I don't think it'll happen, at least not as soon as they say. More than anything, I think it's an MGM ruse to make people think things are going better than they actually are. Honestly, I could care less if The Hobbit ever gets made.
DVD:
Here's what's being released on Tuesday, October 19th:
-Apocalypse Now (Blu-Ray) - This version has both the theatrical cut and the redux cut. I prefer the theatrical version, mainly because the redux version tends to drag on with the added footage.
-Dolph Lundgren is the Killing Machine (DVD) - Why am I putting this on the list? Because I fuckin' like Dolph Lundgren and I'm not afraid to admit it! He primarily stars in direct-to-dvd titles, like this one, which is a shame. Some of his titles are average at best, but others are quite good. The Russian Specialist, directed by Lundgren, surprised the hell out of me. It looked and felt like a genuine theatrical release, which is a pretty good compliment for a direct-to-dvd title. This one is also directed by Lundgren.
-Ultimate Editions of Harry Potter: Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire (Blu-Ray and DVD) - If I didn't already own copies of these, I'd pick them up on Blu-ray.
-Moulin Rouge! (Blu-Ray) - People seem to either love this or hate it. I don't yet own it, so this may be the time to pull the trigger.
-Predators (Blu-Ray and DVD) - I liked it. It has it's flaws, like being a little too close in tone to Predator; however, it did a lot of things right. It stands head and shoulders above the AvP films, and gives most Predator fans something to point at and say, "See, a modern Predator movie CAN be enjoyable!" I will be buying this.
-The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Blu-Ray) - I'm not sure a film like this could be made today. It's just so damn bizarre. I don't mind Hollywood remaking films, but this is one of the few I hope never gets re-done. This release includes two numbers never seen theatrically or on home video, so I'm looking forward to getting this.
Moulin Rouge is easily in my top ten films. Pull the trigger.
